Music , The Love of My Life ! Dave Brubeck , a day short of his 92!

Blessed are the weird people ( The ones called Crazies ) -poets, misfits, writers, mystics , painters & troubadours–for they teach us to see the world through different eyes.
Jacob Nordby

Did you know Music changes the way we think ?  Did you know Music actually changes our brain ? We know much more about how we see than how we hear. Sound transmitted to the inner ear is broken down according to the spectrum of frequencies that make up sounds. What is it with some brains that understand the complex symphony of such tunes as Bach , Wagner , Mozart , The Rolling Stones , The Beatles , and Rap .

Some may come into the world with a pre-wired predisposition to enjoy singing and music,  just as language capacities. Culture and experience also play a major role in how we perceive music.

In the study of Brain activities , there is an increased flow of blood and oxygen to different brain areas when people play and listen to music.

Music performance involves many cognitive, perceptual, and motor skills.”These skills can be transferred to different kinds of intellectual activities. Music also allows you to put a lot of emotion into what you play or sing and to your daily life ,  and by bringing out and exercising musical ability in children, we nurture the development of their intelligence.

But lets talk about Dave Brubeck ..listen to this magnificent recording live from 1964 :

Dave because of his brilliant Sound was never send to the Frontlines to fight but he formed a band . His fully integrated band caused a stir . What caused Dave Brubeck to take such a stand against Racism : ”

I think I may have been six or seven, but I have to guess. And I don’t know what was in my father’s mind, but we were together. I used to go with him sometimes when he’d buy cattle. [We were down] on the Sacramento River. And my wife’s uncle always hung out with a black rodeo rider. His name, believe it or not, was Shine. And so my dad just brought me up to this guy and he said “open your shirt for Dave and show him your chest.” And he did and there was this brand on his chest. And my dad said “something like this should never happen again.”

“You’ve gotta remember I’m around cattle branding and I know what it’s like, that hot iron, ’cause I’ve branded hundreds of cattle. And the hotter the iron, the less it will hurt and the quicker you can get off, get off the burning and the smell of that burnt hair and skin. So you want to get that fire as hot as you can. And the whole picture came to my mind, because I’ve been around branding as long as I can remember. And to see a, a wonderful man having had to go through that was just too much for me….It had an impact on me that I’ll never forget. All of my life I thought what I can do about this. It’s like my dad telling me to do something about it.”

Dave Brubeck died today  in Connecticut on his way to a cardiology appointment, one day shy of his 92nd birthday.

“Donald Fagen assured us so, in his classic song “New Frontier,” where the Steely Dan singer, projecting himself back to the bop-crazed 1950s, sounded positively giddy about surviving a nuclear disaster in a fallout shelter. The end of the world as we knew it would feel fine, as long as a guy had his girl—and the jazzman—to weather the ultimate storm:

I hear you’re mad about Brubeck/
I like your eyes, I like him too/
He’s an artist, a pioneer
/We’ve got to have some music on the new frontier…”

I had heard Brubeck in Person a few times ..Once I even got close and he asked me where I was from . He said , well I have named my son Darius , that’s that Persian !  ( Son was named after Darius Milhaud , Dave’s mentor ) ..I had this warm feeling and I thought : ” Not only I love  Jazz but Dave’s Brubeck ‘s son is named Darius ” .. All of his six Children are Professional Musicians,  one sadly died in 2009.

who was Brubeck ? In his own words :

Brubeck believed that jazz presented the best face of America to the world.

“Jazz is about freedom within discipline . Usually a dictatorship like in Russia and Germany will prevent jazz from being played because it just seemed to represent freedom, democracy and the United States.

“Many people don’t understand how disciplined you have to be to play jazz. … And that is really the idea of democracy — freedom within the Constitution or discipline. You don’t just get out there and do anything you want.”

“When you hear Bach or Mozart, you hear perfection . Remember that Bach, Mozart and Beethoven were great improvisers. I can hear that in their music.”

Brubeck was always fascinated by the rhythms of everyday life. He recalled the rhythms he heard while working as a boy on cattle drives at the

northern California ranch managed by his father.

The first time he heard polyrhythms — the use of two rhythms at the same time — was on horseback.

He was married for 70 years ! To Lola ..Also very active in Jazz and Music scene :

People , even non-Jazz listeners could relate to his Music , and it influenced the future of the music

“If there’s a heaven,” Brubeck said, “let it be a good place for all of us to jam together and have a wonderful, wonderful musical experience.”

“And there is a time where you can be beyond yourself. You can be better than your technique. You can be better than most of your usual ideas. And this is a whole other category that you can get into. “
